The Humane Society of Greenwood assumed operation of the Greenwood County Animal Shelter in October 2002.  The shelter has an open-intake policy receiving all animals either found in Greenwood County or belonging to County residents. 

The facility has been "pieced together" over the past thirty-plus years and was not designed to house the number of animals brought to it each and every day.
