There’s no official breed listing of a Labra-Basset, but our charming Betty Boop’s here to challenge that — hers is indeed a rare breed of appeal, and of her many assets nothing shines brighter than her amiable, outgoing ways, not even the sheen on her beautiful black coat. Betty Boop’s destined to be a selfless, loyal and trustworthy companion for kids and a prized family member; she’s great on a leash and is waiting to walk with you into a future as happy as her ever-cheerful heart. Both Food Lion locations in Greenwood have been collecting food and supplies on behalf of the non-profit agency during the month of April. One of our biggest needs is dry dog and puppy food. The Humane Society has received over 800 dogs in 2012, with 338 being puppies less than four months of age.

His name’s Spanky, maybe in honor of his spankin’ clean white paws — but then his pure white bib and mouth are equally immaculate, so who knows. He’s in his prime, we figure he was 7 on his last birthday; he’s already neutered, healthy and well cared for, imminently social and quick to come when you call him. Spanky’s clearly someone’s dear lost pet, and he’s the perfect candidate for “All-Time Best Outdoor Cat.” He loves to be outside, happily guarding your doorstep and soaking up the rays, comforting and comfortable, just close enough to rub his kind affection on you at every opportunity. Spanky’s fine with other cats and dogs, and would be a fun, steadfast friend for your kids — and you too, of course, and probably and your neighbors. The Humane Society of Greenwood wants all to realize that animal abuse and neglect occurs in their own community. It’s important to recognize the signs of neglect, whether it’s intentional or not, and to report it for the sake of the animal. Here are 9 Ways to Prevent Animal Cruelty and to help make the world a safer place for animals.

Be Aware

Without phone calls from the concerned citizens who report cruelty in their neighborhoods, law enforcement wouldn’t know about most instances of animal abuse. It all comes from the public, it all starts with YOU—that’s why it’s so important to keep your eyes and ears open. Get to know and look out for the animals in your neighborhood. By being aware, you’re more likely to notice, for example, that the dog next door who was once hefty has lost weight rapidly—a possible indicator of abuse or neglect.

Learn to recognize animal cruelty

Here are some signs and symptoms seen in many of the cases investigated:

• Tick or flea infestations. Such a condition, if left untreated by a veterinarian, can lead to an animal’s death.
• Wounds on the body.
• Patches of missing hair.
• Extremely thin, starving animals.
• Limping.
• An owner striking or otherwise physically abusing an animal.
• Dogs who are repeatedly left alone without food and water, often chained up in a yard.
• Dogs who have been hit by cars-or are showing any of the signs listed above-and have not been taken to a veterinarian.
• Dogs who are kept outside without shelter in extreme weather conditions.
• Animals who cower in fear or act aggressively when approached by their owners.

Know who to call to report animal cruelty
